HASA Health Information Exchange Selects 4medica to Match Patient Identities

Nearly 5,000 HIE provider participants, other Texas HIEs and 15 state HIEs will access the same accurate patient record which is why it is imperative to match patient identities.

MARINA DEL REY, Calif.—March 19, 2019HASA, a nonprofit, community health information exchange (HIE) in Texas, today announced its selection of the 4medica Big Data MPI™ to reconcile and correctly match patient identities to the right records. The 4medica® solution will enable HASA to provide its provider participants and other Texas and state HIE partners with accurate, real-time patient data, an initiative that supports the IHI Triple Aim goals for optimizing health system performance. HASA serves patients residing within the Corpus Christi, North Texas, San Antonio and West Texas regions. The HIE sought a richness of master patient index functionality to match electronic health record-specific data received from the disparate systems of its nearly 5,000 participating hospitals, health systems, physician practices, federally qualified health centers and payers. “HASA’s mission is to offer value-based, patient-centered information services to improve the health status of individuals in the communities that we serve,” said Phil Beckett, Ph.D., HASA’s CEO. “The 4medica Big Data MPI gives us a more efficient and cost-effective method to lower the high volume threshold of duplicate information. A foundational element of a trustworthy health information exchange is having a reliable master patient index in place to recognize and correct incoming data accurately and quickly.” HASA’s partnership with 4medica includes the 4medica Big Data Identity Enrichment™ solution that employs sophisticated search engine technology and algorithms to compute referential and historical matching of demographic data (name, address, birthdate, etc.) from multiple records belonging to the same person. The match patient identities are then synced to 4medica’s continuously updated master patient index database. Currently, HASA’s data steward employees manually review up to 1,500 records daily identified as probable patient record matches needing merging or deeper analysis. “Matching up the right patient information to the right record is a very time-consuming, cumbersome process,” noted Beckett. “We expect 4medica to reduce our employees’ workload by half and streamline their workflow. Moreover, the significant time saved permits the tackling of the more challenging data dissimilarities requiring a stronger hands-on approach.” HASA will share its clean, up-to-date data powered by 4medica with other collaborating Texas-based HIEs and 15 state HIE organizations through the patient centered data home (PCDH), a national initiative created to help health information exchanges collaborate to seamlessly deliver patient health information across state lines and health systems. The Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaboration (SHIEC) sponsors the PCDH. “We applaud HASA for undertaking this momentous step forward to improve and share the most accurate patient data with their providers, other statewide patient communities and HIE organizations across the nation,” said Gregg Church, president of 4medica. “The bottom line is that physicians make the most logical clinical evaluation based on the information in front of them. Together with HASA, we are solving this long-time industry problem by making possible a single longitudinal record containing complete, accurate and up-to-date medical information for each identified patient—whether patients visit providers locally or in a geographic area outside their state.” About HASA HASA is a nonprofit, community health information exchange (HIE) in Texas that facilitates electronic exchange of patient information with physicians, hospitals, labs, pharmacies and other providers.
